What you need to know:
- Maryland taxpayers have until July 15 to file and pay with no penalty or interest
- This is an automatic extension for Maryland taxpayers, no additional paperwork is required
- The extension DOES NOT apply to business returns
- The Federal income tax deadline is still April 18
- The extension applies to 2022 estimated tax payments for individuals
The Maryland Comptroller announced that the filing and payment deadline for 2021 Maryland state individual income taxes will be extended to Friday, July 15th, 2022. Comptroller Franchot’s decision for the extension is to “…help taxpayers still facing financial hardships from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.” This is now the third consecutive year the deadline has been extended.
Who Does This Affect?
The extension to July 15th is automatically granted to all resident and nonresident filers. If Maryland taxpayers seek additional time, they have until July 15th to file an extension request until October 17th. Any expected balance due of 2021 tax should be paid by July 15th.
Who Is Not Affected?
It should be noted that this extension does not apply to business income tax filing and payment deadlines.
How Can YHB Help?
If you have questions about how this extension will impact your filings and payments, please contact your YHB trusted advisor.
Taxpayers should be aware that changes made last year to both the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the state Earned Income Credit (EIC) could benefit them and giving themselves amble time to file is advised. In addition, taxpayers who expect to receive a refund should file their return as soon as possible and not wait until July 15th.
