“The thing I like most about being an accountant is working with people and helping them solve problems. I’m lucky to have the ability to come up other ways to look at things and find solutions — as well as opportunities — they otherwise may never benefit from. It’s very rewarding to see them smile when we show them a new way to save tax or increase their bottom line — I just love it.”

Experience

After working for A. M. Pullen (later McGladrey & Pullen) for ten years, David established his own firm in 1990. He co-founded Rose, Creasy & Company in 1992, which became Rose, Sanderson & Creasy in 1997 and merged with Yount Hyde Barbour in 2005. Throughout his career, David’s practice has been focused on providing tax, estate and financial planning and compliance services to closely held companies and their owners, especially in the construction and real estate industry, as well as to nonprofits and their directors.

Expertise

One of David’s greatest strengths is his ability to help businesses select entity structures that minimize taxes for the owners, as well as to identify ways to address operational issues and increase profitability. He also is highly proficient in providing gift and estate planning services and helping clients obtain tax exempt status and benefit from land preservation, low-income housing, and historic tax credits. His expertise in business taxation has been recognized by Virginia Business magazine, which repeatedly named him as one of the state’s Super CPAs.

Approach

David begins by identifying the client’s goals in relation to his or her current situation and industry benchmarks. This helps him see what needs to be done and how YHB can be of greatest benefit — for example, in developing a business plan, connecting the clients with sources of financing, or bringing in other YHB team members to help with technology systems or assurance services. For David, frequent communication with clients is essential to keep them on track. To this end, he checks in regularly and makes it a point to always be accessible to answer questions and help with problems.
